THE IMPORTANCE OF
INTERNAL REFLECTION

BY DAWN BLITZ

With limited staff members, never-enough hours in the day and an ever-expanding to-do list, it is widely recognized and accepted that development directors and their staff are often caught in a “fire drill.” When this occurs, staff can only focus on the most pressing issue, most vocal donor, or the latest idea from a board member. It is unrealistic and unproductive to maintain a culture of this nature over the long term. Not only will the organization suffer, but staff burnout and turnover will likely occur.

To institute a culture of success in a development department of any size, it is important that staff have the opportunity to spend time away from the office focusing on team vision, performance, goals and best practices. While it can be hard to schedule time away from the office, having a “team day” every six months will improve internal and external productivity, culture, and ultimately donor relations and organizational philanthropy.

There are many consultants who can lead a team day, as well as books with suggested agendas; however what is most important is what your department needs at the time and your desired outcomes. Create an environment where each team member can share thoughts, ideas and concerns rather than having the department leader lecture the department the entire day. Together, establish goals and desired outcomes and invite your team to suggest topics for discussion. Addressing best practices will help newer staff members learn the specific way your organization operates as well as serve as a reminder to long-standing staff members.

Consider having your team read StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath. Rath suggests that each of us have specific strengths that can positively impact both our professional and personal lives. The book includes instructions for taking an online questionnaire that reveals each person’s top five strengths. Discussing each person’s strengths will provide insight in to how and why they operate the way they do.

Regardless of the agenda you establish, a team day should create a more cohesive department, unified vision and ultimately impact your bottom line.
